Our Terra Power Systems team engineered the major solar panel and generator set solution for PAK'nSAVE to provide a continuous reliable backup power source during a power outage.
Project manager Chris Tai says it’s taken about two years from design to handover, with multiple complexities and constraints they’ve needed to manage.
The space for the C18 genset is quite tight, especially as we also had to work in with the existing structural beams, and install all the seismic anchors and braces,
As well as installing the generator, Terra also oversaw the establishment of a 312-strong array of solar panels on the supermarket’s roof.
"We oversaw the engineering and layout designs of the solar array, then commissioned an electrical contractor to do the install,” Chris explains.
We then did the wiring down to the solar inverters that are located next to the genset, then connected everything up.
The new Pak’nSave is the first in Canterbury since 2015; construction began in April 2022 and its doors are due to open on Tuesday 19 March. It’s designed to be energy efficient and to be able to trade continuously for three days in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.
